On the edge of the island is a city where, because it is not far from the sea, every layer of sediment has a quality of softness like water. In the city is a street named Sunken Moon Street, a wide ring road surrounding the city, forming its edge.

Part One The Beginning Maman is examining the Senjed packs like a detective. They all look the same to me, but she’s always had a gift for picking the best. In our family, she’s known for her taste in cooking and how she elegantly decorates the house. Every Nowruz she sets up a perfect Haft Sin, takes pictures of it, and sends them to everyone, even those who visit in person. She calls it her artistic taste, proud that I’ve inherited my taste in art from her, doing so well in my high school art courses. I’m happy for her.
